Free Character Makers Compared: Picrew and Alternatives
Picrew is usually the first stop for making an original character (OC) for free. It’s great at what it does, but it’s a 2D picture maker, and every maker on it is a separate creator’s work with its own rules. If you need something different — a 3D model, a file you can animate, or a furry character with a full body — one of the alternatives below will fit better.
Quick comparison
| Tool | Output | Style | Learning curve | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Picrew | 2D PNG | Depends on each maker | None | Quick portraits and icons |
| Charat | 2D PNG | Chibi / anime avatars | None | Cute anime profile pictures |
| VRoid Studio | 3D VRM | Anime humanoid | Medium | VTuber-style human avatars |
| Blender | Anything | Anything | Steep | Fully custom models |
| 10maker | 3D PMX / GLB, PNG, GIF | Chibi 3D animals | None | Animal OCs, fursonas, MMD models |
Picrew
What it is: a Japanese platform where illustrators publish “image makers.” You pick a maker you like, click through hair, eyes, clothes and so on, and download a PNG.
Strengths: thousands of art styles, instant results, works on phones.
Limits: output is a single flat image from one angle. Each maker sets its own terms of use — many allow personal icons but not commercial use or editing — so read the rules on the maker’s page before you use the result anywhere public. Animal and furry options exist, but they depend entirely on which makers creators have published.
Charat
What it is: a browser-based avatar maker focused on chibi and anime-style characters.
Strengths: consistent, polished style; easy to get a cute profile picture.
Limits: like Picrew, it’s 2D. You get an image, not a model you can pose or animate.
VRoid Studio
What it is: free 3D character creation software from pixiv, aimed at anime-style humanoids. It exports VRM models used by many VTuber apps.
Strengths: real 3D models with hair physics, ready for VTuber software.
Limits: it’s a desktop app with a lot of sliders to learn, and it’s built around human bodies. Animal ears and tails are possible with accessories, but a fully animal-shaped character isn’t what it’s designed for. Getting a model into MMD usually means converting VRM to PMX with extra tools.
Blender
What it is: the free, open-source 3D suite that can make anything.
Strengths: no limits on style or quality; exports every major format.
Limits: you’re modeling from scratch. Expect weeks of practice before your first character looks the way you imagine — which is fine if learning 3D is the goal, and a lot if you just want an OC this weekend.
10maker
What it is: a free 3D animal character maker that runs in the browser — the tool on this site.
Strengths:
- 15 ear shapes, 5 tails, 9 eye styles, 6 mouths, plus brows, lashes, patterns, blush, moles, scars, ribbons and accessories.
- You can rotate the character, play built-in dances, and record a GIF.
- Exports a PMX with standard MMD bones and leg IK, a GLB for Blender or Unity, a 4K PNG and GIF — all free, with a small 10maker.app credit.
- No account and no upload; everything stays in your browser.
Limits: it makes one specific look — chibi 3D animals. If you want a realistic human or a detailed painted portrait, Picrew or VRoid Studio is the better pick.
Which one should you use?
- “I want a quick icon in a style I love.” Picrew. Check the maker’s rules.
- “I want a cute anime avatar.” Charat.
- “I want a human VTuber model.” VRoid Studio.
- “I want to learn 3D properly.” Blender.
- “I want an animal OC or fursona I can rotate, animate or use in MMD.” 10maker.
You can also combine them: design the look in a fast maker, then use it as a reference when you commission art or model in Blender.
FAQ
Is Picrew free for commercial use? It depends on the individual maker. Each one lists its own terms, and many restrict commercial use. Always check the maker’s page.
Which free character maker exports a 3D model? VRoid Studio (VRM) and 10maker (PMX and GLB). Blender exports everything but isn’t a “maker” — you build the model yourself.
Can I use a 10maker character in MikuMikuDance? Yes — export the PMX and follow How to Import .PMX Files into MikuMikuDance.
